What makes a contemporary violin a classic?
The art of violinmaking has flourished in the past several decades. There are more makers at work today than at any other time in history, and a survey of the profession reveals an astonishing faith in their standards; eighty percent of dealers, retailers, restorers, and accessory manufacturers agree that the best instruments made today are at least equal in sound to the best ever made. Twenty-two percent believe they are superior.* It is fair to assume that the finest contemporary instruments will one day be regarded as classics - the unique products of gifted individuals responding to their historical moment.
Joseph Curtin began building instruments in 1977 under the guidance of Otto Erdesz. In 1997, after twelve years with Curtin & Alf, he opened his own workshop, where he designs and builds violins and violas for an international clientele. His instruments are in the hands of some of the most distinguished artists of our time.
