Joseph Curtin became interested in violin acoustics when he met researcher Carleen Hutchins in the early 1980s. His interest intensified after moving to Ann Arbor and meeting Gabriel Weinreich, a University of Michigan physicist and leading authority on the physics of the violin. Curtin has since worked with many scientists and researchers.
